Join me in my quest to create an operating system for The Zune.

Specs that I know:

Battery - 700mAH (NON-Replacable)

Thus far that's All I know

What I can guess but don't know because I don't have a zune:
Format ------ ??FAT32??
RAM ------ ??32mb??
Organization of files on Device -------- ?

This and many things we need to know.

What type of CPU chip does it have, how do we access the Wifi and turn that into something even more usefull than it was made to do.

We need some Hi-Res scans of the internals.

Does it have a video out.

What decodes the videos on the player.

Any info would be helpful.

I would like my zune to behave like a PC. When you want music, run the music player.

Be cool if it could talk to wireless LANs. Then we could surf the net direct.

See pictures of the guts of zune at
http://www.bunniestudios.com/wordpress/?p=131
Theres a high res pic.

It looks like the battery is actualy 800mAh
Bunny says the processor is a Freescale iMX31L

I'm sure I saw somewhere (can't find it now) that the zune ran Windows CE.

Wi-Fi: Bunny provided a couple of link. This look interesting

Will keep searching for crumbs of knowledge...

Been thinking about this - always dangerous...

When I connect the digital camera via usb, I close all the photo libary stuff that pops open and just treat it as a removable drive and grab all the files.

Now, if Microsoft wanted to stop us accessing the zune in the same way, where would they do it? My guess is somewhere in the drivers on the PC. There must be access for the software updates.

Here's another thought: how about piggybacking some code with the zune software update? Need some hacker knowledge.

On the piggybacking code idea... the Zune probably connects to a server each time it is plugged into a computer. So... why not use a proxy server to redirect to your own website with custom software?

I installed the zune software onto another PC.
I exported the registry before and after the install and then did a registry compare.

the compare showed 17,610 changes

I'm thinking that somewhere in those changes there is information about the protocols used to open communications with the Zune.
